A good cordless vacuum makes cleaning something you do in five minutes rather than a weekly chore. No cable, no dragging a cylinder upstairs, and it converts to a handheld for the car and sofa. Black Friday is usually one of the better times of year for discounts on the big brands, so it's worth knowing which model you want before the deals start.

The main differences are how well the floorhead copes with long and pet hair (anti-tangle brush rolls), real runtime on full power (much lower than the headline figure), bin size and emptying, and the warranty. Shark offers 5 years on registration (2 on batteries), which is a strong point compared with Dyson's 2.

The Guardian named this Shark its best cordless vacuum overall, praising it on both carpet and hard floors and noting the 2-litre auto-empty dock. The DuoClean Detect floorhead uses two brush rolls and sensors that boost power when they detect more dirt, edges or a change of floor type. It's also designed to pick up when pulled backwards, not only when pushed forwards. When you dock it, the dock empties the bin into a sealed 2L base, so you might only empty that every few weeks.

It is expensive, and Amazon reviews average around 4.2 stars from a few hundred ratings, so not everyone is won over. Most owners praise the cleaning, the easy handheld switch and the self-emptying, but some find battery life or suction disappointing, and the dock takes up floor space. If you don't need auto-empty, the Stratos below gets you much of the same cleaning for less.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Auto-empty dock: fewer bin trips, less dust
  • Cleans forwards and backwards; senses dirt
  • Strong pet-hair handling
  • 5-year guarantee on registration

Watch-outs

  • Expensive
  • Dock needs floor space and a socket
  • Mixed owner views on battery life

The Stratos is Shark's flagship stick without the dock. Expert Reviews found its carpet and hard-floor cleaning strong and its anti-hair-wrap effective, but measured only about 10 minutes 47 seconds of runtime on full power, against the claimed 60 minutes in Eco. That gap is normal for cordless vacuums and the main thing to plan around: use Eco for everyday cleaning and Boost for rugs.

Owners mostly praise how it handles dog hair, dust and grit, and how easy the bin is to empty. The recurring complaints are short battery life at high power and, in a minority of reviews, faults within months. Register the 5-year guarantee as soon as it arrives.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Excellent at pet and long hair
  • DuoClean floorhead for carpet and hard floors
  • Removable battery
  • Anti-odour cartridge

Watch-outs

  • Full-power runtime around 11 minutes in independent testing
  • Some durability complaints
  • Single battery in this bundle

Numatic's Henry Quick does emptying differently. Dust is compacted into disposable pods, and you click one out over the bin with no cloud of dust and no fingers in the debris. Six pods come in the box. Owners like the near-hour runtime, its performance on rugs and hard floors, and how it copes with stairs and landings. Reviews average around 4.4 stars.

The trade-off is ongoing pod costs, and it lacks the sensor tech and anti-hair-wrap brush rolls of the Sharks. If you have long-haired pets, a Shark is likely the better fit. If you want a simple, reliable stick and a mess-free bin, the Henry Quick is a strong choice.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Dust-free one-click pod emptying
  • Long runtime
  • Interchangeable battery
  • Well liked by owners

Watch-outs

  • Ongoing cost of replacement pods
  • No anti-tangle brush roll
  • Some find it a bit heavy

The V8 Advanced is the updated version of one of Dyson's best-selling sticks, with 130 air watts of suction, a de-tangling Motorbar head and up to 40 minutes in Eco. Owners rate it highly for suction, low weight and how easy it is to carry upstairs. It's a sensible way into Dyson without paying V15 money. The Guardian rated the V15 Detect Absolute superb on all floors but expensive and messy to empty, and when we checked it was only available on Amazon from third-party sellers at well above its usual price, so we haven't linked it.

The bin is small, and the warranty is 2 years rather than Shark's 5. Battery life is the most common complaint, as with most cordless vacuums. When we checked, Amazon was listing it through other sellers rather than Amazon itself, so check the seller and whether it's the UK model before buying.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Light and easy to carry
  • Strong suction for its size
  • De-tangling Motorbar head
  • Proven model with lots of reviews

Watch-outs

  • Small 0.54L bin
  • 2-year warranty
  • Availability on Amazon varies by seller

Best budget pick

Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet Cordless Vacuum CLSV-B4KP

Best for: Flats and smaller budgets that still need a motorised pet tool

Claimed max runtime

3 years (per listing)

The Blade 4 Pet is a long-running budget favourite, with 2,400+ ratings averaging about 4.2 stars. You get a removable 4.0Ah ONEPWR battery (shared with other Vax tools), up to 45 minutes' claimed runtime, Boost mode and a motorised pet tool for stairs and upholstery. It's the most affordable way here to get a capable cordless vacuum from a big UK brand.

It doesn't have the anti-hair-wrap brush roll of the Sharks, so expect to cut hair off the roller now and then. When we checked, Amazon itself had no featured offer and it was sold by other sellers, so compare the seller and price on the listing. We also looked at Vax's newer HomePro Pet-Design. The Guardian rated it good value, but Amazon owner reviews are poor (around 3 stars, with complaints about suction and durability), so we've left it out for now.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Much cheaper than Shark or Dyson
  • Removable ONEPWR battery
  • Motorised pet tool included
  • Large pool of owner reviews

Watch-outs

  • No anti-hair-wrap brush roll
  • Smaller bin
  • Sold via other sellers at the time of checking

Runtime: ignore the headline number

Every claimed runtime is measured in the lowest power mode, often with a non-motorised tool. On full power expect roughly 8–15 minutes. Expert Reviews measured the Shark Stratos at about 10m47s on full power. For a typical 3-bed house, a battery that does 25–40 minutes in normal mode is plenty. If you have a big home, look for a removable battery so you can add a spare.

Pet hair and long hair

Anti-tangle brush rolls (Shark's Anti Hair Wrap, Dyson's de-tangling Motorbar) make the biggest everyday difference for dog owners and families with long hair. Without one you'll be cutting hair off the roller every week or two. A motorised mini-tool is also worth having for stairs, sofas and dog beds.

Carpet vs hard floor

Shark's DuoClean heads combine a bristle roller for carpet with a soft roller that polishes up fine dust on hard floors. Single-roller heads can scatter debris on laminate and tiles. If most of your home is hard floor, check the floorhead before anything else.

Emptying and allergies

Small bins fill quickly in pet homes. Self-emptying docks (Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty) and pod systems (Henry Quick) reduce the dust cloud you get when emptying, which matters if anyone has allergies. Docks need floor space near a socket.

Warranty and batteries

Batteries are the part most likely to fade. Shark gives 5 years on the vacuum (2 on batteries) when you register, Dyson 2 years, and Vax often 2–3 years. Check that you're buying the UK model from a reputable seller, especially when Amazon lists a product through third-party sellers rather than selling it itself.

FAQs

Can a cordless vacuum replace my corded one?

For most flats and small-to-medium houses, yes. Larger homes with lots of carpet may want a spare battery or a model with a longer real-world runtime, or keep the corded vacuum for occasional deep cleans.

Is Shark or Dyson better?

Independent UK testing currently favours Shark on value, pet hair handling and warranty (5 years on registration versus Dyson's 2). Dyson models tend to be lighter and have strong suction for their size. Pick on your floors, pets and budget.

How long do cordless vacuum batteries last?

Typically 3–5 years before runtime noticeably drops, depending on use. Models with removable batteries let you replace just the battery.

What's the best cordless vacuum for dog hair?

Look for an anti-hair-wrap brush roll and a motorised pet tool. The Shark Stratos and PowerDetect models are strong choices; the Vax Blade 4 Pet is a budget option without anti-wrap.

When is the best time to buy?

Big-brand cordless vacuums are often discounted around Black Friday, Prime Day and January sales. We don't list prices because they change constantly. Use the links to check the live price.
